Recipient of a Quilt of Valour, MWO(Ret’d) Chris Christenson
Canadian Armed Forces members, past and present, have served our country and sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today. Many bear the scars, visible and invisible, of their service. One organization has found a unique and heartwarming way to bring comfort to Canada’s ill and injured Veterans.
Quilts of Valour - Canada Society
is a network of volunteers who create handmade quilts to thank and support those who served. These works of art – each a tribute to the service and sacrifice of the recipient – are stitched with love from a grateful nation.
Quilts of Valour - Canada Society’s
mission is to ensure injured military members are recognized for their service and commitment to our country. Quilts of Valour gives this support through the presentation of quilts to comfort Canadian Veterans. Over 16,000 quilts have already draped the shoulders of these deserving recipients. Their goal is to give a quilt to every ill or injured Veteran in Canada.
The Royal Canadian Legion is helping them achieve that goal.
Over the last two years, Legion Branches across the country have donated $12,400 to Quilts of Valour - Canada Society
. Last week, Legion National Headquarters presented another $20,000 through the Legion’s Veteran Support Partnership Program. In addition to providing financial support, many Legions also offer their halls to quilting groups to craft these beautiful tributes, and host Quilts of Valour quilt presentations.
“The Legion is delighted to see the quilting community come together to express their gratitude and support for our Veterans,” says Dominion President Thomas D. Irvine. “We are proud to support the work of Quilts of Valour - Canada Society
as they bring handmade works of comfort and thanks to Veterans and their families.”
