The Royal Canadian Legion and the Calgary Grey Cup Committee (CGGC) once again joined forces during the 111th Grey Cup Festival to honour Canada’s Veterans and celebrate the spirit of Western hospitality. The 2nd Annual Stampede Breakfast and VIP Reception brought together Grey Cup fans, local dignitaries, and Legion members for a day of fun, food, and Remembrance.
Since 1948, the Calgary Grey Cup Committee has been an integral part of the Grey Cup celebrations, bringing Calgary’s distinctive Western spirit to the festivities across Canada. This year, the committee continued this tradition while partnering with the Legion to highlight its vital work in supporting Veterans and their families.
Hosted at Legion – Billy Bishop Branch 176 in Vancouver, the Stampede Breakfast featured authentic Calgary Stampede griddles serving up pancakes and sausage to a crowd eager to experience Calgary’s hospitality. The event was filled with entertainment, including appearances from Randy Ambrosie, CFL Commissioner, and Councillor Dan McLean, who delivered a warm Western greeting on behalf of the City of Calgary. The BC Lions UPROAR Dance Team energized the crowd with a lively performance, and the atmosphere was further enhanced by live music, fun interactions with Charlie Horse, and an appearance from Tuffy Nuff, the Calgary Grey Cup Committee’s beloved mascot.
Later in the day, the VIP Reception recognised the contributions and sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans through a White Hat Ceremony. Two veterans, Don Hitsman and Josh Muir, were honoured with the symbolic white hat by the Honourable Lois Mitchell, 18th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The event also featured a generous donation to the Legion in support of its ongoing work for Veterans and their families. Guests enjoyed stirring performances, speeches, and a heartfelt celebration of Canada’s military heritage.
The Legion and the Calgary Grey Cup Committee are proud to continue their partnership in supporting and honouring Canada’s Veterans. The 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast and VIP Reception were a resounding success, bringing together Canadians from all walks of life to recognize the importance of Remembrance and the Legion’s vital role in supporting Veterans across the country.
As we look ahead, both organizations are excited to continue this tradition and will come together once again for the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg in 2025. The Legion remains committed to honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have served Canada, and we look forward to more meaningful events in the years to come.
