National Headquarters and Branches will lower Canadian flags to half-mast

OTTAWA, ON, 8 APRIL 2022 – The Royal Canadian Legion’s National Headquarters and 1,350 Branches across the country will pay respects to those who fell during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, by lowering their Canadian flags to half-mast on April 9.

Vimy Ridge Day 2022 marks the 105th anniversary of the historic First World War battle in France. Over 3,500 members of the Canadian Corps gave their lives and close to 7,000 were wounded in this offensive. Canadian soldiers stormed Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917 and were eventually successful in gaining control over the land which had been under German occupation. Many consider this battle to have been an instrumental undertaking during the First World War.

A sea of people surround the memorial shortly after the figure of “Canada mourning her dead” was unveiled by King Edward VIII (1936).

In 1922, the French government ceded Vimy Ridge to the people of Canada. The space that saw such formidable battle is now a place of quiet contemplation and gratitude and is forever overseen by The Canadian National Vimy Memorial – which honours all who served during the First World War.
