Volunteering at The Royal Canadian Legion

Apr 13, 2018
The Royal Canadian Legion grew from a history of service. Today, we continue that tradition by volunteering to build a stronger Canada.

April 15 through 21 is National Volunteer Week across Canada and this year’s theme celebrates the value of volunteering.

For members of The Royal Canadian Legion, volunteering offers meaningful opportunities to help Veterans and show their support. Volunteering through the Legion also offers the chance to give back to their community, meet neighbours, learn new skills, expand horizons and have fun!

For the Legion, the value of our volunteers is priceless. The programs and services we provide for those who served, and their families, would not be possible without the support of our dedicated volunteers. From supporting homeless Veterans, to helping ill and injured Veterans get the care they need, to visiting Veterans in long term care facilities, and much more.  We also help Canadians honour and remember those who served and sacrificed, through the Poppy Campaign, organizing commemorative ceremonies, and teaching youth about the importance of Remembrance. Our membersmake a real difference for those who gave so much for our freedoms.

The Royal Canadian Legion grew from a history of service. Today, we continue that tradition by volunteering to build a stronger Canada. In addition to the support we provide for Veterans, Legion members improve the lives of their fellow citizens and strengthen their communities, providing essential programs and services for seniors and families in need, supporting youth education and sports, raising funds to support essential community services, and offering help where help is needed.

But rest assured, it’s not all work and no play at the Legion! In our early days, we served as the extended military family of Veterans coming home from war, offering a place to meet and enjoy time with friends. Today, we continue that tradition through our Branch activities and facilities. Legion Branches are central places for people to gather and feel connected to their neighbours. In many places, they serve as the primary community centre, hosting weddings, town meetings, community BBQs, memorial services, and other important events and activities. Our Branches are almost entirely volunteer run and there are endless opportunities to get involved… and have fun at the same time!

This National Volunteer Week, we send a special thank you to our Legion Members for your support and dedication.

For those looking for opportunities to give back and support Canada’s Veterans, to make a difference in your community, and to meet new people and have fun, visit your local Legion Branch to see how you can get involved! With so many opportunities to volunteer, you’re sure to find something that is a perfect fit for what you are looking for.
