News Release
14 March 2007
Dear Branch President:
Do you and your members wish to do something special for our troops in Afghanistan? Well, the Legion has started a great program to show our thanks to these dedicated veterans. We can't send our troops cigarettes as we used to in the Second World War, but we can sure buy them a Tim Hortons coffee and doughnut. In fact we can probably buy them coffee and doughnuts on a regular basis.
We have initiated a major CF support program called the “RCL Troop Morale Fund” through which we hope to raise funds to treat our troops in Afghanistan to a Tim Hortons coffee and doughnut. With every $7,000 received from the branches we can buy every Canadian soldier in Afghanistan a coffee and doughnut compliments of The Royal Canadian Legion. Hopefully we will raise enough money on a regular basis to provide them with coffee and doughnuts at least once a week.
It's a little gift but it means a lot. And they will know that we are there for them. As to the mechanics, all that your branch has to do is collect Canadian dollars in any way that you wish and send a cheque for that amount directly to Dominion Command made out to the “RCL Troop Morale Fund”. The enclosed “tent” style posters for use at the branch can be used to help in your fund collection. Every time that we have over $6,000 US in the central fund we will arrange with the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency (CFPSA) to purchase 3,000 Tim Hortons coffee and doughnut certificates over-stamped with the words "This certificate courtesy of The Royal Canadian Legion and its supporters in Canada".
To get things started Dominion Command has donated $6,000 to buy the first round of coffee and doughnut certificates. Once again, it's a small gift but it means a lot. It is the least that we can do to show our troops that we care and that we are behind them 100%. So, let's make this program a smashing success. I am truly grateful for your support.
